Local Guide Parks & Recreation The city of Ukiah maintains a number of beautiful parks for public enjoyment. Todd Grove Park on Park Blvd. features a public swimming pool, playground and picnic areas amid tall redwood trees. Oak Manor Park on Oak Manor Drive, features tennis courts, a playground and picnic areas. Vinewood Park, a residential park located on Pine and Magnolia Streets, has a small playground and picnic area. The Sun House Park on Main Street adjacent to the Grace Hudson Museum offers a garden-like setting for picnics. Summer baseball and softball leagues and school teams make use of Anton Stadium, near Todd Grove Park. Nearby county parks include: Low Gap Park near Ukiah High School with 80 acres of hiking trails, volleyball and basketball courts, playing fields and a disc-golf course; Mill Creek County Park with 400 acres in a canyon in the Mayacama Mountains east of Ukiah features summertime swimming and fishing, barbecue, horseshoe and basketball facilities: McKee County Parkway is along the road between Highway 20 and Potter Valley northeast of Ukiah with hiking, swimming and fishing. LAKE MENDOCINO Lake Mendocino is located in the northern coast range of California where redwood forests meet the wine country. Created by the construction of Coyote Dam on the East Fork of the Russian River in 1958. The dam, built and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provides flood damage reduction, water conservation, and hydroelectric power. The lake also provides many recreation opportunities. LAKE PILLSBURY RECREATION AREA Lake Pillsbury is located a short drive northeast of Ukiah near Potter Valley. It is the largest lake in the Mendocino National Forest, with thirty-one miles of shoreline. Popular activities at Lake Pillsbury include fishing, boating, sailing and water-skiing. GOLFING Guests at Hampton Inn Ukiah regularly enjoy the Ukiah Municipal Golf Course. This is a beautiful and challenging 18-hole par 70 course. It is nestled long the western edge of Todd Grove Park and the southern edge of Low Gap Park. This great golf course is very well maintained and is open for use year-round with a pro shop, bar and snack shop. Golfers will also be interested in the Fairgrounds Driving Range in Ukiah next to the 12th District Fairgrounds. COW MOUNTAIN Named for the longhorn cattle that once roamed wild, the 52,000-acre Cow Mountain Recreation Area offers a variety of recreational opportunities. The terrain is rugged, consisting mostly of steep, chaparral-covered slopes with scattered stands of fir, pine and oak. Elevations range from 800 to 4,000 feet. The area offers beautiful views of Ukiah and Clear Lake, over 31 miles of stream, 13 wildlife reservoirs, and habitat for blacktail deer, bear, wild turkey, and other upland species. The Recreation Area is divided into three management sections to provide quality recreational opportunities for a wide variety of users: North Cow Mountain Recreation Area, South Cow Mountain OHV Recreation Area and the Sheldon Creek Recreation Site. Access roads into these areas are narrow and winding. Travel trailers and large recreational vehicles are not recommended. Directions to North Cow Mountain: Directions to South Cow Mountain: Low Gap Park is located near Ukiah High School on Low Gap Road, covering 80 acres. There are hiking trails, a children's play area, volleyball and basketball courts, playing fields and a disc-golf course. Mill Creek County Park covers nearly 400 acres, mostly on the sides of a steep mountain canyon in the Mayacama Mountains east of Ukiah. There are two ponds nestled in the narrow valley that are used exclusively in the summer for swimming and fishing. There are also picnic, barbecue, group camping, horseshoe and basketball facilities available. McKee County Parkway, located along the road connecting Potter Valley with State Hwy. 20, is almost 2 miles long and lies between the road and the middle of the East Fork of the Russian River.
